This shot is beautiful! It's a shame you couldn't get up there!

Jess, Dylan and I once went to go up there to take some shots...we crashed a wedding or something...we slunk away...

Should have but they were all inside and we already got a dirty look from one of the guests...silly man! We didn't really want to face the priest either, all done up in his white robe:O And there was already a little camera boy by his side:D

Thanks man. I used a fisheye lens for this, supposedly 180 degrees but i think it falls a tad short of that - still damn wide though:D

Is that you down the bottom? I think clone whoever that is out, it's distracting. Love the wide angle, fisheye would be nice in my kit ;)

Nah its my mate. I tried hiding him behind the railing haha. Tokina 10-17mm would be good for your 40D and it can even be used @ 16mm on fulll frame;)

Around the $700 mark.. mine was $250 but only has the real fish look on FF, sucks on crop(the 10-17 does both nicely)

i'm using a fisheye lens(Zenitar 16mm).. its fully manual and doesn't communicate with the camera at all:D

Ohh... Cheap alternative to the Canon one, how do you like it? I'm interested in picking one up, but I'm looking to get one for <$200... haha

Hell cheaper at 1/4 of the Canon! Its awesome apart from being pretty crappy wide open with soft glowing edges and poor corner resolution.. need to stop down to at at least F/5.6 to get acceptable sharpness across the image. That said this was taken wide open accidently:oops:

Alright, so I took the plunge and bought one...
I've heard of this lens before and looked into it... I've heard about them having some build quality issues, so hopefully I get one that came from a good batch...
Also I don't know how much experience you have with this lens on other cameras, but I'd really appreciate your input... Is it pretty much going to be a waste when I use the lens on Canon XSI with its 1.6x multiplier if I'm going for the fish eye effect? I want a full frame DSLR that would use the lens to its full potential, but just can't see myself spending the money right now.

Nice one! Yes there seems to be performance variants in nearly every lens these days.. or theres just lots of people whinging:D But i can't see any cheaper fisheyes going around!?

Its definitely not as spectacular on a crop dslr as FF but you still get the fishy distortion just not as wide(as its equiv. to 25mm). Heres an example comparing to a normal 16mm wideangle lens [link] and the fisheye [link] this is on a 40D(1.6x factor). I'll have to redo it and include a shot with the 5D(might find something better to take a shot of too:lol: )

Yeh, I don't think there are any cheaper ones; definitely nothing offering similar results.
Seems the issue is that the components for these lenses were built a few years back and they are of great quality, but the staff assembling them now is not very qualified and doesn't know how to properly test lenses? Some people have tweaked the lens adjustments themselves and got much better results focusing at infinity. I think the Zenitar department producing these lenses closed down in 2005...? Not exactly sure I have to look into it a bit more it's interesting stuff.

And thanks! That's a great comparison; I was looking for something like that. I'd love to see the 5D results, so please let me know if you decide to snap a few test pics. I've seen results comparisons among 1.3x, 1.6x, full frame, 35mmm, etc comparisons, but not on fish eye lens. And, haha, yeh, a more exciting subject to photograph should not be difficult to find... ;)
